4 Qualities Greater Than Talent

talentTalent is always good to have but talent alone will not get you very far. If you are not as talented as you would like to be when it comes to your pursuits in life, do not worry, there are four other qualities that will beat talent every time.

4 Qualities Greater Than Talent

Desire – When it comes to overcoming a lack of talent I always think of the bumblebee. In theory and going by the laws of aerodynamics, a bumblebee should never be able to fly but it does anyway. The bumblebee flies because it wants to fly. When you are motivated to do anything and if your desire is strong enough, a lack of talent will never stop you. Desire is a quality that will allow you to persist through challenges, look for innovative solutions and to never take “no” for an answer.

How many times have you watched someone more talented but not invested in what they are doing come up with average results? With a strong enough desire you are destined to succeed where the talented ones who lack desire fall short.

Continue learning – My new motto in life is Always Be Learning. When you are willing to crack open a new book, research and study, it will sharpen your skills allowing you to master almost anything. When you learn something new and then you apply it to your craft in an intelligent manner, you will gain an even sharper edge in life.

Emotional intelligence – Those who rely completely on talent to get by in life tend to struggle when things don’t turn out as they would have preferred or expected. If you have the emotional intelligence to take a defeat or setback in stride, and choose to learn from an experience instead, you will advance in any endeavor.

Hard work – There are many stories about people who embraced the value of hard work to overcome their lack of talent. Two NBA stars that come to mind are Michael Jordan and Kevin Durant. Both of these players were not so great when they were younger but they put in the hard work to elevate them beyond their peers. Just doing the hard work is not a random thing either. You have to show up and consistently apply that work ethic daily. You have to show up in order to do the work.

Talent is one of those things that you either have or you don’t. The key to these other four elements is that they can be developed and fostered if you are willing to put in the effort.

When it comes to talent, I can tell you that I don’t believe there is one thing that I have mastered or gotten good at in life that I was every talented or naturally gifted at. However, I can tell you that the things that I AM good at are the products of many years of work over time while leveraging the things listed above. Running is a prime example of  that… Never let a lack of talent stop you… ever.

If you don’t consider yourself to one of the talented few you can be assured that talent on it’s own will only go so far. Never give up and think that you can’t be successful. Find your desire, keep learning, develop your emotional intelligence, and be committed to working hard all of the time.
