Regain Control Of Your Life – 4 Tips

regain control of your lifeLife does not always turn out as planned and unexpected challenges can throw our lives completely off course. Despite your circumstances, you can always regain control of your life.

When you lose control over the events in your life or when bad things happen, if you allow yourself to become discouraged then you have given up any chance of maintaining a position of strength in order to deal with things.

This is why having a positive attitude is SO important. When you give in to negativity, you are literally giving up any control that you may have in your situation. By maintaining a positive attitude or mind-set, you are more able to rely on your strengths to put yourself back into “the driver’s seat” and more readily get things back under control.

Regain Control Of Your Life

Events such as divorce, death of a loved one, loss of a job, or even an unplanned illness can completely take over our lives but even when those things happen and it “hits the fan” you can still regain control of your life if you:

  • Focus on the things that you CAN control. – This is one thing that I work on with my clients all the time. Make a list of things that YOU can do and a list of things that you must turn over to the universe. For example, you might not have complete control over your health if faced with a disease but you can regain control of your life by exercising more, eating healthier, hydrating, and making sure you get plenty of rest.
  • Get clear on what you want. – Clarify what it is that you want to accomplish in your life and break it down into small steps. Once you get clear on what you want, develop a plan, and begin to follow through on that plan, then commit to spending at least a small part of every day working towards that goal.
  • Unclutter your life! – As my cousin taught me so long ago, “a clean camp takes care of itself.” Do the little things, meaning the tasks that give you a sense of control. Wash the dishes in the sink and put things away. Focus on your appearance and on making a good impression – always. If you can get the little details in your life in order, the bigger ones will follow. Another way to look at it is that when life no longer makes sense… clean up your mess and this includes you!
  • Look on the bright side. – It’s an overplayed statement but you can regain control of your life or at least regain control of your perspective of life by trying to see the possible benefits of your current situation. Perhaps what you are going through can give you greater insight into how to manage other difficulties in life? Maybe you can you can use “what you are going through” in such a way that it helps others? There is always a brighter side if we choose to look for it.

The bottom line is that you can’t control everything that happens in life. Life happens and so does all of the “stuff” that comes with it. However, you can always control your response to anything that happens. And choosing to control your response instead of reacting is always the first step to regain control of your life.
