5 Ways To Keep The Faith On Your Path

For over a year now my path has been that of a self-employed entrepreneur. It takes a lot of hard work and it takes a whole lot of faith.

By faith I mean the unshakable belief that what I am doing everyday is leading me in the exact direction of where I want to go. Some days it might feel like I am cruising right along, other days the progress might feel slow and unbearable, and then there are the days when I feel like I haven’t made any progress at all and may even be going backwards.

On the easy days, having faith is easy… actually on the easy days and when things are going great, those are the days that bolster my faith and belief in everything that I am doing. It is the hard days where I feel like I am just spinning my wheels. The days when I don’t get to talk to potential new clients or the writing is just exceptionally difficult. This is when the faith component really comes into play and I am forced into blindly believing that all turn out well in the end.

On the easy days I practice gratitude, and on the hard days… faith. If you find yourself struggling to keep the faith in your path, here are five ways to help you focus and stay on course:

  1. Remember your purpose. When your path becomes dark or difficult remember your overall purpose for being there in the first place. For me I have to remind myself that my number one goal in life right now is to help people in any way that I can. When I feel that I might not be accomplishing that I look for proof that everything I am doing is at least having some small impact. It never fails that when I am at the bottom of that pit of doubt, the universe always gives me a sign that things are indeed going in the right direction. It could be a phone call, an e-mail, or maybe even a text from someone thanking me for what I am doing or have done. I remember my purpose and resolve to keep moving.
  2. Worrying and complaining will not help. Someone once told me that worrying is like praying for what you don’t want to have happen. Complaining if things are not going well is only going to invite more negative as well. When you are losing traction and going forward seems futile, do whatever you can to keep from worrying and complaining. If you believe in something, keep trying. Take action instead of giving into negative thoughts. Do whatever you can to move the ball forward, even the slightest little bit because even the smallest forward movement is still forward movement.
  3. Embrace the struggle. Nothing worth having comes easy and most growth is a product of pain and discomfort. Trust me, in the end, when you look back at everything that you have accomplished, you will remember the hard days as the fun days. It is weird but that is how it works. If the struggle and doubt are getting to you,  here is a list of 20 quotes on discomfort and growth that will help. Remember, just because you are struggling, it doesn’t mean you’re failing. Every great success requires some type hardship to get there.
  4. Look at your wins. If you find yourself stuck, take a moment to look back at where you started and where you are now. You can assure yourself that if you made it from where you started to where you are now, then you can keep going and make it from where you are now to where you wan to go. When you look at your wins, you will see that you are actually getting ahead, getting better, and getting smarter all of the time.
  5. Trust in yourself! This may be the hardest thing to do. Trust you inner-genius. Trust your intuition. Ensure that you are doing your absolute best everyday and believe that even if you might not end up exactly where you intended to go, you will eventually arrive precisely where you need to be. Like it or not, sometimes your path will take detours! Believe in your inner-wisdom to guide you to the places, to the people, and to the circumstances where you will find new opportunities that will assist you along your way. If you begin to lose faith in your path and direction in life, take a second to ensure that you are trusting in yourself first and above all else. Have faith in yourself! Once you can do that you can have faith in everything else.

When all else fails, just keep going. There will be times when it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong is going wrong. When you feel like quitting, it is important to remember that sometimes things have to go very wrong before they can be right.  Sometimes you have to go through the worst to bring out your best.

Our paths in life regardless of our desired destinations are never easy. And part of the process of continuing in any endeavor is holding a certain amount of faith at any given point along the way. I have learned this past year in building my business that the most challenging thing does not have anything to do with building the business. Instead, it is the greatest test of faith that I have ever experienced and for that, I am grateful. When my faith in my path or in myself falters, I rely on the five steps above to keep me above water. They work for me and I hope that they will work for you too.

What helps you to maintain faith in yourself and your path when you are struggling?
