Aiming For Mediocrity

aiming for mediocrityIf I am guilty of one thing in my life, it has been my tendency always to try to overreach. It’s that whole “shoot for the moon and if you miss you will at least be among the stars” mentality. It’s because I believe that if you are aiming for mediocrity, then mediocrity is what you will get.

If you have a small vision for your life then you will have a small life… it’s the same with goals… small goals might be more achievable but are small results really what you want for yourself?

I mean really….who wakes up in the morning and consciously decides to shoot for average.

But if average or mediocre is your goal in life, then here are five ways to ensure you reach it.

Aiming For Mediocrity

  1. Think small – What does your vision for your life look like? If you are not sure, this is the answer: You are living it. The bigger, the grander and the more bold your vision, so too will be your results. The bigger your vision… the bigger your life will be. Think small and small is what you will get.
  2. Safe is good – I heard once that playing it safe is playing to lose. Playing it safe is aiming for mediocrity at best. Sure, there is no fear of failure because there is nothing ever placed at risk. Safe is boring and so is mediocrity.
  3. Refuse to learn anything new – Maybe you ascended a bit above average at one time in your life and have achieved a token modicum of success. But if you insist on staying there and refuse to learn anything new or expand your repertoire in anyway, you are guaranteed to slip right back down into mediocrity as you and your skills become dated, obsolete, and no longer relevant.
  4. Fear success – Many more people fear success than fear failure. If you fear success or if the idea of success of any sort has a negative meaning to you, you will never achieve it… You might not be aiming for mediocrity, but mediocre will the best you could hope for.
  5. You are never challenged – The mediocre or average in life are content to be surrounded by sheep and there is never anyone who challenges them to ever do or be anything more. If you have more sheep in your life than wolves to challenge you to step up in any way, then you are guaranteed to be just another member of the herd.

Aiming for mediocrity is easy and the easiest way to get there is to always to do what you have always done. If that is all you do then you are guaranteed to always get the same thing over, and over, and over again.

But if you want to step out of that mold and shoot beyond being “just average” then challenge yourself to grow and find others who will challenge you as well.
