An Experiment – I Have Decided

I have decidedThis past summer was probably the best summer of my entire life. I love summertime and to be honest it is my favorite part of the year. Winter, however, is not my favorite and at best, I suffer it just waiting for the days to pass until warmer days are here.

As fall here in Aspen decisively turned more towards winter a couple of weeks ago I had an inspired thought… since I just had the best summer of my life ever, why not make this the best winter of my life ever as well?

As I bounced that idea and question around in my mind, I finally concluded “why not?” Why not have the best winter of my life right after the best summer of my life… I mean, it only makes sense, right?

This is going to be the best winter of my life. Why, because I have decided that it will be; Plain and simple.

To be clear, I have decided that this will be the best, greatest and most fun winter of my life. And because I have decided that, it surely will be.

“I have decided” is actually one of my coaching tricks that I use with my clients, so why not apply it to my life as well!

The thing is that when you say, “I have decided” it takes the focus away from what is lacking and forces you to focus on action and making your declaration so. It gives you a “positive” emotional charge and makes you feel empowered that you have actually decided to do something instead of just allowing things to “happen.”

How I apply this process with my clients is that when they are at a crossroads and they are making a decision or many, I have them write down and read to me their “I have decided” statements… such as “I have decided to get a new job” or “I have decided to quit chewing my nails” or “I have decided to start my own business.” I think you get the idea.

It’s powerful and it really works as I can often hear the shift in my client’s voices after doing it.

As for me… this is an experiment. Will I have the greatest winter ever, who knows? But I do know that after I declared my decision that I too felt a great shift and now winter is something that I am truly 100% excited about instead of looking at the calendar and counting the days until May.

P.S. I laid away my snowboarding package yesterday… boots, bindings, and a truly sick board… I have decided to have the best winter ever and I WILL be snowboarding A LOT!
