Be Careful – The Plate Is Hot

be carefulWhen you go out for dinner and when your meal arrives, what does the server tell you sometimes? Be careful – the plate is hot – in other words… do not touch the plate. So what is the first thing you do after that?

Be Careful – The Plate Is Hot

It is funny if I think about it. Whenever I go our for Mexican Food and the dinner comes out the first thing the server tells me is that the plate is hot… and as soon as the server leaves, what do I do? Yup! I touch the plate and always end up saying something like, “damn… that plate IS hot.”

I just had to touch it… I just had to see for myself even though I was already told that the plate is hot at the risk of burning my hand off and ruining dinner. Why do I always do that?

Be careful – the plate is hot which is said to stop me from wanting to touch the plate has the exact opposite effect.

“Wet paint. Do not touch.” I bet you check it don’t you?

“Road Closed!” How many times have you driven past this kind of sign just to see how far it is to the road is closed and why?

“Don’t read the rest of this article!” – Have you stopped reading yet? Probably not.

More often that not, what we are told “not” to do is the thing that we invariably end up doing but why? Simple… because when are told “don’t” that is exactly what our mind latches onto and ultimately drives us to do.

How many times have you said to yourself…“Don’t foul this up,” or “Don’t be stupid,” or “I don’t want to fail”?

In your mind… psychologically, what do you think happens when you say these things?

Your mind latches onto fouling up, being stupid or being a failure.

The unconscious mind can’t handle the word “don’t.” The concept does not compute. When you say “I don’t want to fail,” you’re giving your brain only one idea to consider and because your brain can’t possibly comprehend any other possibilities, it focuses on the one thing you have given it: failing.

You end up focusing on the one thing you didn’t want to focus on therefore you end up doing exactly what you were trying to avoid.

So, what would happen if you changed “I don’t want to fail” to “I want to succeed”? A completely different message, isn’t it?

If you live your life saying “I don’t want…” you will be thinking a lot about all the things you don’t want, which is exactly what you’ll end up with.

But if you live your life saying “I want…” you will be thinking about all the specific things you do want, and that’s exactly what you’ll end up with.

But don’t take my word for it… Be careful – the plate is hot.
