Deliver Excellence

If you want to stand out from the crowd and you want to beat your competition, there is really only one thing that you have to do… deliver excellence. That is it… just deliver excellence.

I know it seems obvious and even a little over simplified but it is the truth. How many experiences do you have in a day, such as making purchases, working with a specific service industry, dining out, etc, that you would actually consider excellent? Be truthful.

I figured out a long time ago when I was a manager for a large telecommunications company that doing the minimum, heck even less than that, one can usually get by. Most did. The frustrating part was that it was usually not noticed, and if it was, it was doubtful that anyone would ever be consequenced for it.

So I came up with my own term and theory, and I called it situational incompetence. What situational incompetence means is that 95% of the time you do your best, you do your job and everything required of you at your utmost ability. BUT say something goes wrong… or something nasty comes down the pike at you or your team and you botch it up. You can botch it up deliberately or not… the outcome is the same. But don’t worry, you are safe because remember, ineptitude is rampant and screwing up once or twice really doesn’t mean anything anymore… you can be incompetent and get by with it, just be selective about when you choose to play that card… that’s all!

Situational incompetence is a silly idea that I thought up and really it was because I was so frustrated and figured if everyone else in the world can be a screw up, then I can too! Of course we never played that card but it made for a fun discussion to blow off steam. That’s just not how I work. Ever.

However, I can’t say the same for the rest of the world and this is why if you choose to deliver excellence, you will always win, and you will win every time.

Seriously… just deliver excellence. Go above and beyond, stand out, make a difference, and the world will notice. If you want to stand out from the rest of the competition, set a phenomenal standard, become elite at what you do, and you WILL stand alone.

If you can deliver excellence, you will never feel crowded by competition. Ever.
