Do You Really Need To Have Goals?

Do You Really Need To Have GoalsThe past two days I have been putting together a presentation on goals and goal setting. As part of my intro for the material, I plan to ask everyone the question, “Do you really need to have goals to be successful in life?”

After giving a lot of thought, I believe the answer to the question is, “it just depends.”

I am sure there are many people in life who float along quite well without ever setting goal one. Good things just happen to them, or the lives just unfold that way, and this is just fine. For them.

The rest of us probably need goals though and here is why… without goals, fulfilled or not, we don’t have direction, we don’t have intention, and we do not have a focus. If you buy into the theory of the Law of Attraction, goals do make sense as they force us continually to focus on what we want until we get it. So in a sense, even though reaching a goal takes work, focusing on a goal – truly focusing on a goal also attracts results.

Without goals, life is lived by “default” as I like to say. For some people, that works out fine but for the rest of us… not so much. When you do not have goals or a vision for your life, you tend to take what you get in a very passive manner. Setting goals and pursuing them makes you a more active participant in life.

Goals enhance the quality of life. Man needs three things. Something to love, something to do, and something to believe in. Goals give our lives purpose and without purpose, why even get out of bed in the morning? Having a goal focuses you on what you need to do and a worthy goal will be something that you definitely believe in. Goals enable you to be passionate about life and a passionate life is a life well lived.

Ask yourself this… even if you had goals that did not work out, where would be, or where might have ended up if you did not set the goal to begin with? I think Bruce Lee summed it perfectly when he said, “A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at.”

Do you really need to have goals to be successful in life? Who knows… but for me, I can not image a life without them.  How about you?
