Don’t Believe Everything You Think

don't believe everything you thinkThere is the old quote that says, “Don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.” When it comes to other things not to believe I am also a fan of, “Don’t believe everything you think.”

Don’t believe everything you think… at first it sounds sort of funny if you think about it because as thinking creatures we like to assume that any and all thoughts we might have are both accurate and true… but they aren’t; At least not all of the time.

I often say that we always have the choice when it comes to what we think and what we believe, and THAT is true. Sometimes our thoughts and beliefs are just like an old stinky pair of socks that have to be changed, and not just for our benefit but for the benefit of everyone around us too! (Maybe this is where the phrase “stinking thinking” comes from?)

What I am getting at here specifically is how our thought patterns when it comes to self-doubt or what we believe we can or cannot do in life are often not true or accurate.

We all have ways of talking (thinking) ourselves out of the things that we want to do in life, be it start a new career, a new business, get fit, or even go on a very long and adventurous trip. We allow those thoughts to create obstacles, such as we lack the time, the money, the knowledge, etc, but what it really comes down to is that we think that we just do not have it in us.

Don’t Believe Everything You Think

Don’t believe everything that you think and when you catch yourself thinking that you can’t do something or that you’re not good enough or smart enough, recognize and acknowledge those thoughts but choose to consciously replace them with an opposite thought as many times as it takes until “the story” changes.

By doing this on a regular basis, your brain will begin to default to a more positive mode of thinking where you turn can’t into can. It is no different from learning how to say when instead of if.

In addition, do not believe everything that other people think as well! Never allow anyone else’s self-doubt to be projected upon you or take theirs on as your own. Typically, when someone tells you they think you can’t do something, it is mostly because they don’t believe they can do it themselves.

I still find it funny whenever I tell myself not to believe everything that I think but in all seriousness, it is a sound reminder to check-in continually with my thoughts and myself and to evaluate not only how accurate my thoughts are but how credible they are as well.

Just remember, don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see, and never believe everything you think as well.
