Don’t Worry About Tomorrow

don't worry about tomorrowWho doesn’t have concerns or anxiety about the future every once in awhile? I know that I do at times. But stressing over the future and living “there” can be just as bad if not worse than living in the past. Don’t worry about tomorrow… focus on today instead.

One of my favorite Bible versus, Proverbs 27.1 says, “Do not boast of tomorrow for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” What this means is don’t be counting your chickens before they hatch because you never know what is going to happen the next day.

But if that is true then so is the opposite which I translate as meaning, don’t worry about tomorrow because all the bad things you are thinking that could happen just as easily might not happen.

Don’t Worry About Tomorrow

If you find yourself constantly worrying about tomorrow, ask yourself… ‘What do I fear most? How likely is it that this fear will become a reality? How much energy do I expend worrying about what may or may not happen?’

If you ask yourself those questions and you honestly answering them, you might just discover how much precious energy and thought that you are wasting. Ultimately, its how you throw a perfectly good day (today) into the rubbish bin.

Have hope for tomorrow? Sure… Plan for tomorrow? Most definitely! But don’t worry about tomorrow but insted focus on making today the best that you can. It just seems that the natural order of things is this… take care of today and tomorrow will take care of itself… why? Because tomorrow (when you get there) is another day to do your best…

There is a reason that so many 12-step programs embrace the “one day at a time” philosophy… they are right, you can only live today… do your best today… don’t “use” today… The premise here is that if you string enough “good” days together, only focusing on that day as it is… sooner or later you are going to put together enough good days, weeks, months, and years… but it doesn’t happen from worrying about tomorrow.

Now I don’t subscribe to the YOLO (you only live once) philosophy of doing whatever the heck it is that you want to do without any regard for future consequences either… But at the same time, when it comes right down to it, today is the only day that you have… why waste it worrying about the future?

Don’t worry about tomorrow… it doesn’t mean that we should act as if a problem does not exist. However, worrying about what could happen tomorrow will only subtract from the joy of living today. We have little power over what may develop tomorrow, good or bad. But we can always make today the best day that we can and be happy with that.
