Four Tips For When You Are Off

Four Tips For When You Are OffYou are cruising right along and then is happens; you lose your momentum, you find yourself in a slump and nothing that you do seems to work or pull you out of it. If that has happened to you then here are four tips for when you are off to help get you back on track.

Four Tips For When You Are Off

  1. Recognize that you are off. – There is a saying that goes, “if you feel something if off it is because something is.” So when you feel off yourself, don’t ignore it… something is up (or off.) You can’t fix what you don’t recognize, so the first step to breaking out of your slump is to be honest with yourself that something is amiss.
  2. Get back to basics. – Myself, I have been off for a few days now. A bout with the flu last week pushed my productivity down to a negative five instead of my usual ten or eleven and I still feel rather tired. Instead of trying to power through it as if everything is fine, I am focusing on the simple tasks of every day, work, write, help my clients, etc. The “extras” in life and other extracurricular activities are now on hold until I am “better” and back up to full speed. When you are off taking a step back often helps… and don’t be shy about taking a big break altogether if you have to.
  3. Don’t beat yourself up too bad. – Things happen… in my case it was the flu, but life has a way of throwing all sorts of curve balls at us. The point is that sometimes when we lose or momentum or are off it just might not be our fault. Just as life is full of great and awesome days, there are going to days that aren’t so much… Stop the negative self-talk, focus on doing your best and you will soon be back to doing your best.
  4. Accept the support of others. – One of the reasons you might feel off is from taking care of others and trying to “do it all” all of the time. Allow those closest to you help if they see you are having a challenging time and struggling a bit. And don’t feel guilty about it… everyone has times when they need more help than others… you WILL get the chance to repay the favor.

Being off from time to time is normal so don’t freak out when it happens to you. Acknowledge that you are off and not at the top of your game if you need to and focus on the basics of your day-to-day tasks to keep moving forward at least a little bit. Be patient with yourself as you work through it and be sure to let others help if they are available and willing to help.
