Have A Good Day Today

have a good day todayMany years ago, I wrote this on a yellow sticky and placed in on my monitor at work… You only have to have a good day today …

You only have to have a good day today. It is a simple concept, maybe even too simple but that one sentence, especially back then, made a huge difference and changed my life.

It reminded me to make the best of the day that I was living. It reminded me to stop focusing on the past, what had gone wrong, and to stop stressing about tomorrow or the future.

I look at life like training for a running race most of the time. As one of my running coaches explained to me, “Just make today’s run good and only worry about that. Then get a few good runs in this week and make it a good training week. String a few of those good training weeks together in a row and after a while you are getting somewhere.”

Life is no different… You only have to have a good day today. After that, tomorrow, just focus on having a good day that day as well. Once you have enough good days back to back, then you have a good week. Have enough good weeks in a row, you have a good month… good months turn into good years and good years turns into a good life…

But it all starts with today… You only have to have a good day today…

Start today by being grateful for all that you have. Focus on what you have versus what you do not. If you were able to get out of bed and stand on your own two legs without any assistance, well that is a miracle right there worthy of massive gratitude.

Decide that you are going to have a good day. Resolve that you will not allow the bastards to get you down, even if that bastard is yourself…. Decide to do all that you can today to make today great, do what you have to get done and do your best so that when you head hits your pillow, you go to sleep with the peace of mind of a day well spent and well lived.

Choose a positive attitude over a negative one. Choose optimism over pessimism…. Choose faith over fear.

As Og Mandino wrote in The Greatest Salesman in the World:

“When you have finished your day, be done with it. Never save any of your load to carry on the morrow. You have done your best, and if some blunders and errors have crept in, forget them. Live this day, and everyday, as if it all may end at sunset, and when your head hits the pillow, rest, knowing that you have done your best.”

You only have to have a good day today. As long as you focus on that one idea every day as a day unto itself, I can guarantee that before long your life will look different, feel different, and even you will be different as a result.
