Holiday Weight LossI hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving. The holiday season is officially here, and along with it comes the parties, the food, the drinks… and the calories. If dieting and fitness was a focus for you this year, this next month can potentially undo it all.

This holiday season I invite you to do something different. I call it my holiday weight loss challenge and it is really rather simple.

I am not sure when I started doing it but it was several years ago. I was determined not to gain weight over the holidays, so from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, I pledged to lose ten pounds during that window instead of gaining ten pounds which is touted as the average weight gain that people experience through the holidays.

A note regarding the ten-pound thing… as the tale goes, nearly everyone gains ten pounds over the holidays, but I don’t agree that is entirely accurate. In addition, it is reported that those ten pounds gained every year are never lost. Again, another inaccuracy, because if you were to gain ten pounds every year… over ten years, well, that’s a 100 pound gain which is huge.

Regardless of the numbers or the accuracy of them, this is still a time to be wary of overindulgences with results that can sneak up on you come the first of the year if you are not careful. If the trend is to gain weight over the holidays then why not decide to do something different this year and lose weight instead?

Is it easy? No, not really. Is it doable? Absolutely!

This morning I weighed in at 154 (ouch) so my goal is that I will lose ten pounds by January 1st. To be honest, 144 is a light-weight for me and I don’t know how possible it really is as I know the dieting and training load required for me to get there but that is my goal. But if this were not my goal, if I did not decide to be mindful through this next month or so, I can easily see myself weighing in around 164 come the New Year. Yeah… that I don’t want.

Some hints… This is how I intend to reach my goal, or at least get close to it and these tips will help you:

  1. Increase the exercise. – The amount of daylight outside is still decreasing and it is cold out. It is only going to get worse for the next few weeks making wanting to get outside to exercise a large challenge. Get a headlamp, run in the dark, go to the gym before the beginning of the New Year rush. Do whatever it takes to increase your activity level as much as you can between now the end of the year.
  2. Watch the treats. – You don’t have to eat every cookie, pie, or desert that someone brings into the office. Enjoy a treat every occasionally, do not completely deny yourself, but try to refrain from eating an extra 1000 calories a day just because “it’s the season.”
  3. Drink more water! – Water is a massive tool for weight loss and this time of the year is no different. The more calorie-free water you drink it will prevent you from having as many calorie-laden drinks of other types. Added bonus… This time of the year, you NEED more water. The indoors are heated now and more dry than usual and you need more water to counter act that, as well as the dry skin that comes from being indoors so much.
  4. Eat before parties. – Even if you are going to a dinner party, try to eat a little bit before you go. It will help to modulate your input at the party, plus if you eat a healthy snack before you go, you will me less likely to eat more unhealthy items once at the party.
  5. Say no to the “NOG.” – Okay… this one is for me. Several years ago when I was getting my masters I lived on Egg Nog for about a month. The results were rather disastrous to say the least. Anyway, knowing that Egg Nog is a huge weakness of mine, it is something that I work very hard to stay away from. (Last year I did not have any at all!)

Holiday weight gain is easy…. holiday weight loss… not so much…  but you can do it! The next few weeks – if you use them right – are the perfect time to get a head start on next year’s fitness and weight goals if you choose to do it.
