How To Escape From Quicksand

how to escape from quicksandLike me, you might have memories in regards to quicksand. TV shows, cartoons, movies… there was ALWAYS someone falling into quicksand and as a child I bet one of the biggest things that you wanted to know was how to escape from quicksand in case it happened to you.

How To Escape From Quicksand

Seriously, I grew up thinking that quicksand was going to be an ongoing problem that I would be facing all throughout life as an adult. Needless to say, of the 10,500 days or so that I have been on my own in this world as a grownup, the score is:

Andy: A LOT

Quicksand: Zero

However, if you recall your childhood “training” on how to escape from quicksand and not die, what number one piece of advice do you remember?

What I remember is this… Don’t fight it as it will only make you sink deeper more quickly thus ensuring your doom.

In other words, RELAX!

Now… I know that quicksand is really a real thing and everything I have said has been tongue-in-cheek, but let’s think about quicksand for a minute as a metaphor and how it might translate to real life situations.

Say you are overwhelmed… most of us are, and you can literally feel yourself not only stuck but also sinking deeply into the quagmire that is your current situation. Do you fight it? Most of us typically do and by fighting and resisting “what is” we typically end up just getting ourselves more deeply imbedded (not to mention exhausted) within the entire mess.

As humans, we are born with typically one of two responses to danger and challenges… run or fight, but there are situations like with quicksand, which makes neither one of those a productive course of action. You cannot run because you are rather stuck and you cannot fight because it will only make matters worse.

So you are only left with one option… relax… accept that “what is” won’t be forever and go with it the best you can.

If I remember right there were other tips on how to escape from quicksand such as trying to float or swim on your back, you might remember more than I do.

But the number one tip on how to survive life and how to escape from quicksand are one in the same… relax. You have to relax.

  1. What a good post. It isn’t always the easiest advice to take, but it is definitely the right thing to do in a lot of different situations!

Thank you Lydia and you are right. It is not always the easiest action (or inaction if you will) to take or even remember to do but often it is the best approach. Have a great day!
