20 Inspiring Quotes – Discomfort & Growth

nevetakechancesI have always believed that the path of personal growth is not an easy one to take and that all growth requires a certain degree of discomfort. The weightlifter must lift enough weight  in order to cause muscle tissue to become damaged so that it may heal and become stronger. The runner piles on the miles enduring soreness the next day or two for the same reasons… the stress and discomfort brings on gains in speed, strength, and endurance. Growth…

Nothing happens while we remain in our comfort zone. Without challenge, stress, or pressure we stagnate. In life there are only two modes where you are either growing or you are dying.

Here are some of my favorite quotes regarding growth and discomfort.

“Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle.” – Napoleon Hill

“Ever since I was a child I have had this instinctive urge for expansion and growth. To me, the function and duty of a quality human being is the sincere and honest development of one’s potential.” – Bruce Lee

“The key to growth is the introduction of higher dimensions of consciousness into our awareness.” – Lao Tzu

“The tantalizing discomfort of perplexity is what inspires otherwise ordinary men and women to extraordinary feats of ingenuity and creativity; nothing quite focuses the mind like dissonant details awaiting harmonious resolution.” – Brian Greene

“Comfort zones are most often expanded through discomfort.” – Peter McWilliams

“If you want to choose the pleasure of growth, prepare yourself for some pain.” – Ritu Ghatourey

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” – Viktor E. Frankl

“All growth depends upon activity. There is no development physically or intellectually without effort, and effort means work.” – Calvin Coolidge

“We find comfort among those who agree with us – growth among those who don’t.” – Frank A. Clark

“Growth demands a temporary surrender of security. It may mean giving up familiar but limiting patterns, safe but unrewarding work, values no longer believed in, and relationships that have lost their meaning.” – John C. Maxwell

“Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.” – Albert Einstein

“The secret of success is learning how to use pain and pleasure instead of having pain and pleasure use you. If you do that, you’re in control of your life. If you don’t, life controls you.” – Tony Robbins

“Growth is the only evidence of life” – John Henry Newman

“If you put yourself in a position where you have to stretch outside your comfort zone, then you are forced to expand your consciousness.” – Les Brown

“Adventure should be 80 percent ‘I think this is manageable,’ but it’s good to have that last 20 percent where you’re right outside your comfort zone. Still safe, but outside your comfort zone.” – Bear Grylls

“In so many things, growth comes from adversity.” – Michael Huffington

“We are men and our lot in life is to learn and to be hurled into inconceivable new worlds.” – Carlos Castaneda

“Train at the same pace day after day, week after week, year after year, and that’s the kind of running the body adapts to. But break out of that comfort zone with a little speedwork now and then, and the body will learn to deal with the new demands.” – Don Kardong

“Change and growth is so painful. But it’s so necessary for us to evolve.” – Sarah McLachlan

“Change and growth take place when a person has risked himself and dares to become involved with experimenting with his own life.” – Herbert Otto

As I read these quotes again, I’m inspired and challenged to do more and be more, to operate outside of my own comfort zone so that I can make positive gains towards my own personal growth.
