The Need For New

You are wired to seek novelty in life. If you don’t seek or find it, chances are you will become very bored and restless. Of all the important component of life, the introduction of the new is one of the most important.

You will never grow from doing the same things over and over that you have always done. Growth requires new action and stimuli. Putting yourself into new situations and doing new things challenges you and introduces you to other possibilities in life that you may have never considered or even been aware of.

Even if you have all of the great things in life – love, respect, wealth, etc, without anything new in your life you can become depressed, sad, and disengaged. Your brain “turns-on” whenever something new or challenging is introduced. When your brain is engaged and processing new data, it is a happy brain.

This doesn’t mean to drop everything in your day to day life and to being seeking out new experiences 24×7. But it does mean that you should make an honest effort to introduce new things and experiences into your life on a regular basis. By actively seeking out new experiences you will become more engaged in life and energetic.

Here are some ways to continually introduce new into your life:

  1. Try a new restaurant.
  2. Take a different route to work.
  3. Get away for a weekend.
  4. Go to a movie or a show, or a sporting event.
  5. It doesn’t have to be exotic, just planning a trip and the anticipation of it can energize you.
  6. Get out and make new friends.
  7. Apply and interview for new jobs.
  8. Plan a vacation to somewhere you have never been before.
  9. Take up a new sport.
  10. Read a book on a subject that you always wanted to learn about.
  11. Learn something new… take a class, learn a new hobby.

You are programmed to seek new and exciting experiences in life to keep from being bored. Never blame boredom on your current situation, friends, family, or job. It is up to you to not be boring. As the saying goes, “if you’re bored then you’re boring.” Find something new in life and go after it. It isn’t always easy but you will undoubtedly discover that is well worth it.

Do you have any ways that you like to keep introducing new things into your life?

What are you going to do that is new this year?
