Never Give Up

I constantly aim achieve one goal or another. Do I always reach each specified goal? No, not all the time. Quite often the goals are not reached as I had originally envisioned them and I believe that is just a matter of how things unfold in life. In fact, usually when the end result is different than I imagined it is also usually better than I was originally anticipating. The truth is that if I had reached all of my goals as I had originally planned, life would have been pretty boring. I am grateful for the “alternate results” that came from never giving up.

One of the single most powerful words of advice that I ever received growing up was from my grandfather on the eve of my leaving home for basic training when I was 18 years old. I was nervous and apprehensive about leaving home and to be honest just plain scared of the vast unknown ahead of me. When I asked him what I should do his answer was short and simple. “Always do your best and everything will turn out just fine.” 28 years later nearly to the day and I still reference his words daily.

My interpretation and understanding has morphed over time and now I know that “everything will turn out just fine” doesn’t always mean it will turn out the way I thought it would or the way I may have wanted things to turn out. Regardless, doing my best and never giving up has always been the cornerstone of how I approach life.

Defeat I can deal with. Dealing with a defeat in a situation where I know that I gave up is insufferable.

I am always amazed and inspired by the tenacity and resolution shown by people who experience tragedy and hardship. Being able to carry on despite challenging circumstances is one of the keys to success in any area of your life. To celebrate that, I have put together some great quotes about persistence to encourage anyone who is going through a challenging time and may need a reminder to Never Give Up.

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”  Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the USA

“My greatest point is my persistence. I never give up in a match. However down I am, I fight until the last ball. My list of matches shows that I have turned a great many so-called irretrievable defeats into victories.”  Bjorn Borg, 11 Time Grand Slam Winner

“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.”  Dale Carnegie, Author of How to Win Friends and Influence People

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”  Thomas Edison

“Getting ahead in a difficult profession requires avid faith in yourself. That is why some people with mediocre talent, but with great inner drive, go much further than people with vastly superior talent.”  Sophia Loren

“Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.”  Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Being defeated is only a temporary condition; giving up is what makes it permanent.”  Marilyn vos Savant

“Never give in! Never give in! Never, never, never. Never — in anything great or small, large or petty — never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense.”  Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister during World War 2

I hope that you find these quotes to be helpful.
