The Power of Gratitude

The Power of Gratitude

The trees here in Aspen right now are a brilliant golden color as I am sitting and watching the snow fall over Aspen Mountain and the town itself.  My prominent emotion right now is just one of gratitude.  I am thankful that I get to live here, thankful that my life coaching business is growing, and I am thankful for all of my wonderful clients that I am getting to work with.

The past few days have not been as graceful as right now.  I have had concerns, worries and even a negative thought intrude here and there.  It has pushed me to make a real conscious shift in thought, almost continually at times, in order to move my emotional set point up the scale little by little to where I would actually prefer it to be.

One thing that I have learned over time is the power of gratitude and by continually practicing that, as difficult as it may be at certain moments, is that it is the surest way to get things moving in the right direction again, physically, mentally and emotionally in life.

Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means learning to live your life as if everything were a miracle, and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you’ve been given. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present. In addition, behavioral and psychological research has shown the surprising life improvements that can stem from the practice of gratitude. Giving thanks makes people happier and more resilient, it strengthens relationships, it improves health, and it reduces stress.

As an ultra-runner and life coach one of my favorite examples of utilizing gratitude is during races of very long distances.  I always employ this exercise numerous times during a race and I am certain that it has always had a very positive impact on my results.  I just start by saying thank you for everything in my mind… my health, being able to race, my crew, my family, my friends, the weather, everything.  It is not only a great exercise to pass the time but it also keeps me buoyed and positive.  Maybe this is why people comment about me always smiling during races?

Gratitude is also a very powerful Law of Attraction exercise.  It raises your vibration and puts you more in line with the natural flow of life and well being.

Once you become oriented toward looking for things to be grateful for, you will find that you begin to appreciate simple pleasures and things that you previously took for granted. Gratitude should not be just a reaction to getting what you want, but an all-the-time gratitude, the kind where you notice the little things and where you constantly look for the good even in unpleasant situations.  Start bringing gratitude to your experiences, instead of waiting for a positive experience in order to feel grateful.

Practice gratitude every day… it works!
