The World Is A Scary Place – Maybe

Some time ago, I made the decision to stop obsessively “consuming” the news of the world. I choose to stay informed but not overwhelmed. If all I focused on were the news stories of the day, I would never leave the house, as the world is a scary place.

As is if the reports of everything that goes on in the world is not bad enough, we have our own perspectives on the goodness or inherit evil that exists in the world today. Our upbringing shapes those views as well…

All of us were imprinted one of two ways; either the world is dangerous with moments of safety, or the world is safe with moments of danger.- Deepak Chopra

It is easy to focus on the conflicts, wars, mass shootings, economic instability, natural AND man made disasters, religious fanaticism, and end up feeling like you should never leave the safety of your own home.

If that is what you choose to focus on…

However, do not forget, the world is also a beautiful place full of wonderful people and the incredible things that they do.

The origin of this quote by Fred Rogers (aka Mr. Rogers), I question, but it is still worth quoting…

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.”

Those who build up this world outnumber those who are trying to tear it down.

Those full of love and acceptance outnumber those who are consumed with hatred.

Those who help outnumber those who hurt.

If those ratios were opposite, I believe this world would have ended a very long time ago. Yes, the world is a scary place, but there is still a lot of good in it, many good people with good intentions, and still, a lot of hope.

Regardless if you believe that the world is a scary place or not, I ask you this… Do you want it to stay that way or be that way? What can you do to help? What can you do on even the smallest scale to make a difference? What can you do to bring more beauty in the world to offset the ugliness?

There is always hope and I hope that if you read this entire article that you have ideas on what you can do that you follow through on… If that happens, then my sense of hope surely increases. Sure, the world is a scary place, but it doesn’t have to be that way all of the time especially if “we” do all that “we” can to add to the positive sum, rather than focus on the negative difference of the equation between good and evil.

Today, choose to be a positive part of the world, to see the world as a magical place, and if you can… choose to add your positive contribution to it all. It will and does make a difference.
