Three Basic Elements Of Success

The older I get the more I tend to embrace “the basics.” It’s how I run my business, it’s how I structure my workouts, and it’s even how I choose the foods I eat. Anything overly complicated tends to send me scurrying in the opposite direction. This same “basic” approach has given me clues for the three basic elements of success.

I may tend to oversimplify things at times but this is what works and has shown to work repeatedly in my life. Therefore, in the spirit of keeping things simple, and in the interest of brevity, here are the three basic elements of success:

  1. Most everything in life is as simple if you allow it to be. – It’s easy to over-complicate life with unnecessary worry and stress, but the road to success and a life of significance isn’t as complicated as some people think. Keep it simple. Your life, your affairs, your relationships, your finances… all of it… just simplify. As an ultrarunner with many years of experience and countless races of super-long distances under my belt, I am amazed by how people complicate their races from how much support they think they require on a course to how much stuff they carry. In a recent race, I wondered if some of the other racers were planning on only doing 50 miles or were they planning a through hike of the Colorado Trail, given how much “gear” they were carrying. As one of my good friends is fond of saying about running at any distance… “It’s only running.” You can’t get much more simple than that.
  2. You have to do the work. – It doesn’t matter what you want to excel in, if you want to become elite or even proficient, you need to do the work. Most people are looking for short-cuts, but there aren’t any. If you want to come out on top, you need to work harder and practice more effectively than your competition. And even if you only apply yourself for 15 minutes per day, every day, for a year, you are going to see massive results. But you have to show up and you have to do the work.
  3. You have to maintain your balance! – In sports, in business and with most other activities, you will win some and lose some; there are going to be good days and there are going to be bad days. When you have your wins and victories never miss a chance to celebrate them but never stop working, never stop moving forward. Value you losses and defeats as well, learn from them but never allow yourself to dwell on them for too long. Maintain your balance though; never get carried away in one direction or in another. Just a pendulum swings a full cycle left, it will also swing a full cycle right. Expect that and be okay with it as well.

That is it in a nutshell, the three basic elements of success. Keep things simple, do the work, and keep yourself on even footing no matter what.
