Today, Hit It Out Of The Park!

If you are going to swing at the ball, swing big! You will never hit a home run by bunting.

In the 2002 movie Signs, the character played by Joaquin Phoenix, Merrill, was notorious for striking out. It didn’t matter what the coaches told him and it didn’t matter if the bases were loaded or not. When we was up to bat he would always swing at the ball with all of his might. When asked about it, his reply was simply, “Felt wrong not to swing.” As the story goes though, he also had five minor-league home run records.

It was a long time ago that I saw this movie but it always reminds me that when an opportunity comes your way, give it everything that you have. You can’t knock the ball out of the park with a little tap, you have to give it a big swing.

In anything that you do today, try to hit it out of the park. Work hard and commit yourself to what you’re trying to achieve.

And what if you strike out? What if you miss and look foolish? So what! Going all in and committing yourself fully is what it takes to be successful. I would much rather take three hard swings and miss than have three pitches come through the strike zone while idly standing there… If you are going to be struck out, or if you are going to go down, it is always best to go down swinging. Always.

When I was a kid I played baseball and to be honest I was not very good. I was so bad that I was permanently placed in the outfield. When it was my turn to bat I got so frustrated from being struck out when the pitches would come through the strike zone and I didn’t even swing.  Out of frustration I decided fine… I will swing as hard as I can and strike out that way. At least that way when I was inevitably walking back to the dugout I knew that I had given it my all.

“It’s better to make a mistake with the full force of your being than to timidly avoid mistakes with a trembling spirit.” – Dan Millman

Never accept second best from yourself. Never be happy with just bunting in order to get on base. It takes courage to take risks and the knowledge that if you miss this time, you’ll get another shot at it. Don’t do the bare minimum. Give it a big swing!

So today, and every day, take advantage of every opportunity that you get to perform at your best and perhaps, every now and then, you’ll hit it out of the park!
