Your Truth Is Your Truth

your truth is your truthDo you have friends, family, or coworkers who acknowledge your efforts but then turn around to tell you what you are doing wrong, and what you should “really” be doing. Have you ever had a brilliant idea only to have it shot down by those close around you?

Well meaning or not, when people do this they are minimizing you, minimizing who you are, and are basically telling you that your life is “wrong” and that they have a better idea on how you should be living.

The unfortunate thing is that unless we are strong and confident in what we know to be true about ourselves, we often buckle under these barrages and in the end, think less of ourselves as a result.

So what do you do? Either you can believe them or not as it is your choice. Let’s face it… there are always going to be people close in our lives who think they know best about what is “right” for us and unfortunately in some cases you just can’t escape them. But it is up to you if you want to take on their beliefs about you or not.

I have a well-meaning “adviser” in my life. Over the years, I have come to accept that any idea that I share will be harshly criticized or shot down completely. It used to bother me a lot but now it is just a small annoyance. Why? Because I made the decision to no longer buy into it as I understand and believe what worked for them might not work for me and vice-versa. Anymore, I just smile and nod choosing to believe their intentions are good regardless of the context of the message and just go on with my life.

Your path in life is your path and your path alone. The same can be said about “your truth” – your purposes and reasons for being. Never allow anyone to impose his or her interpretation of “your truth” onto you. The chances are quite great that they are not accurate.

Your truth is your truth. Never allow anyone to project his or her fears, their failures, their mistakes, and their limitations upon you. That is their story… not yours.

When you are aware of your truth, accept and own it, it will give you power beyond belief. It will make you immune to the criticisms and rejections from others. When you know your truth and are comfortable with that, it will also prevent you from being pulled into senseless conflicts where you might be tempted to “react” and go on the defensive thus escalating matters.

You know what they say about opinions… everyone has one, etc. The opinions of others, especially about you are just that, opinion and not necessarily the truth. Know your truth, live your truth, and never allow anyone to ever take that away from you.

Back when I read that Jack London quote it shook me to my core as I did not know who I was anymore and I also had no idea how to be me or what I really wanted in life.
